By Samir Kapoor sir to Gwalior CL students.

Dear All,

First of all I think its always nice to come to Gwalior and interact with smart kids like you. The response and respect you showed at the Kaarnival was commendable, you have made Gwalior proud.

Now over to some Bad news...

I went through your competency scorecards. I think most of you have been very generous to yourselves.

I am sure most of you are a part of “First Steps in the corporate world by Samir Kapoor”. On this Wednesday 20 Oct 2010 I would be posting detailed definitions of the competencies that were mentioned on your competency scorecard. This would detail out when can one individual say that he/she is competent in on particular competency.

In a nutshell you would get the definition of the competency, and would give you a benchmark to what a score of 10 means. After going through the entire document you should be able to find out what are your areas of strength i.e. Competencies where you should rate yourself high. The paragraph wont be restricted to theoretical input, there would be anecdotes that would help you relate yourself to a few competencies.

The next step after this would be to try and put in these competencies as a part of your SOP, so  that during the course of your interview with a premier B-School you are able to  impress upon your strengths supported by real life stories.

Remember with real stories comes conviction, something that all panelists adore.

I am sure all of you would be able to come up with your unique SOP in  the near future.

Your second drafts of SOP should come in within a week of my posting the competency definitions.

Always Remember what Robert Frost said.......have Miles to go before I Sleep..... have Miles to go before I Sleep.....
